I woke up this morning, having had a wonderful night’s rest on the comfy bed, feeling refreshed and ready for the day. After a quick breakfast (yes, I brought some pouches of porridge with me knowing there wouldn’t be any food in the apartment), I went grocery shopping to buy the essentials. A quick drop off of items and then off to the beach. It’s sunny and 28 degrees Celsius, a perfect beach day.
On my way to the beach, I came across this wonderful gate to a private home. That lemon tree on the balcony just made me smile.

Two of my cousins each have a lido in Soverato. This is a restaurant on a private beach where you can rent umbrellas and change cabins during the summer season. They are opened June to September each year and lots of Italian tourists plan their vacations here. You can check out Frank’s instagram page (#lidomediterraneosoverato) and Antonio’s instagram page (#lidosottovento) to see their gorgeous spots on the Ionic Sea. They are both in the middle of shutting down for the winter but I got to spend the day on their beach and was treated to a wonderful lunch by Frank’s chef, Domenico. He made Spaghetti with Baby Squid with cherry tomatoes, garlic and fresh herbs which was absolutely amazing. I spent all day soaking up the sea air and sunshine and catching up with my cousins. A beautiful first day in Soverato.
You’ll see from the photos that the beach is pretty much deserted during this time of year because the locals are working and the tourists just come in the summer so the private beaches become public in the off-season. This place is a gem and worth visiting when it isn’t crowded with people. Yes, you have to bring your own umbrella or find some shade by the rocks but it is so worth it. I picked the perfect place to start my visit to Calabria. Tomorrow I plan to do a repeat and get my cousin’s input on best towns to visit while I’m here.
